I am an Operations Analyst working for an IT company. Four years ago, I was already feeling the negative effects of not taking care of myself. I was not eating nor sleeping well. I did not exercise. I was easily tired, sickly, and moody. So I started to eat right and find an exercise regimen. I went to the gym and ran but was really more interested in yoga.

I went to the first ever class of Yoga+ BGC when they opened in February 2011. I remember feeling dizzy during Hot A and leaving the room by Half Moon. I realized it was intense but I practiced almost every day, to sweat and progress with my practice. It wasn’t too long though when work became crazy and I had to step out of the mat.

I resumed my yoga practice when I transferred to a new job just a few blocks away from Yoga+. I have consistently practiced for two-and-a-half years since.

Many still confuse yoga as just sitting with eyes closed but I am a personal witness of how it totally transforms one’s body. Strength, flexibility, improved posture, stronger immune system, and weight management are just some of the many physical benefits of yoga that I am happy to have achieved and continue to improve on. Although I initially practiced yoga as a workout regimen, I kept coming back for the mental challenge as well. I love the fact that it has helped me to focus, be mindful, stay still, keep grounded, and breathe through tough situations outside the mat. Perhaps the most important thing that I learned is to let go of things that I have no control of and focus on the positive instead of complaining and wasting energy through stress. I look forward to each class, making sure that I am hydrated, well-rested, and inspired for the practice. All the hard work is worth it once I am in Savasana. I love to take this time to observe my breath and how my body feels. To close my eyes, surrender to the earth, and appreciate the present moment is the most calming and rewarding feeling ever.

I would practice any class that falls on my schedule. Hot A,B,C, Ashtanga, Flow, and Yin – I love them all.

My favorite pose is Parsva Bakasana. It requires a lot of strength in the arms, belly, wrists, shoulders, and spine, and as a twisting pose, helps promote detoxification. I would love to do Eka Pada 1 and 2. Maybe one day I will, but I need to work on my hips and hamstrings for now. I also consider Mayurasana a dream posture.

I like Yoga+ for its quality facilities, friendly staff, variety of classes, and knowledgeable and inspiring teachers. I look forward to every class and I have no intentions of stopping my practice.
